Furnishing a new apartment in Accra: a room by room checklist

What should I measure before I buy furniture?
Every room wall to wall, the ceiling height, every window and its sill height, and the position of sockets and air-conditioning units. Then measure the way in: the building entrance, the lift, the stairwell turns and every door the furniture must pass through.
A photo of each room from the doorway is worth as much as the measurements. Bring both to the showroom.
Which room should I furnish first?
The bedroom, because you need to sleep from the first night. Then the living room, then dining. Storage, lighting, rugs and décor come last, once you have lived with the main pieces for a few weeks.
Living room checklist
Sofa or sectional, one or two armchairs, a coffee table and a side table for each seat, a media unit, a rug large enough for the front legs of every seat, and at least one lamp besides the ceiling light.
Dining room checklist
A table with about 60 cm of width per person and 90 cm of clear space behind each chair, the chairs, a sideboard or console for serving and storage, and a pendant or chandelier hung 75 to 85 cm above the tabletop.
Bedroom checklist
Bed and mattress, a bedside table on each side, a dresser or chest of drawers, wardrobes if the room has none built in, a chair, and blackout curtains.
How do I plan delivery to an apartment?
Ask the building management for delivery hours and whether the lift can be reserved. Send the lift and door measurements to the showroom before the order is confirmed, so large pieces can be checked or delivered unassembled.
